Special Surveys

Breeding bird atlases employ scientifically rigorous, standardized methods which work extremely well for observing and mapping most bird species. However, some groups – such as nocturnal species and marsh birds – remain difficult to detect. For this reason, specialized techniques are required to ensure that the distribution and abundance of these species is accurately portrayed in the atlas.
